Song of the Day: '4th of July' by Dave Alvin and John Doe

Always pick X's "4th of July" for my Independence Day Song of the Day -- but was thrilled to find this rare recording of John Doe singing it with the Blasters' Dave Alvin, who actually penned the modern classic that was included on the one X album he was a member for.

Enjoy, baby. It's the "Fourth of July"!

Gov. Cuomo Backs the Other Pill

What a strange world we live in where Larry Kramer is against PrEP, and the governor of New York supports it. Dare we call it progress?

Josh Barro writes:
On Sunday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced an ambitious goal: Ending the AIDS epidemic in New York State by 2020. Governor Cuomo does not mean he expects the state to find a cure; he wants to cut new infections so drastically that the number of New Yorkers living with H.I.V. goes into decline. He has set a goal of 750 new infections in 2020, down from about 3,000 in 2013 and 14,000 at the epidemic’s peak in 1993. To that end, he has embraced a new and controversial treatment for people at risk of contracting H.I.V. He wants to put more H.I.V.-negative people on Truvada, a drug originally developed to treat those who already have the virus, and which the F.D.A. approved in 2012 as protection against new infections.
When I asked why the governor had made PrEP a key part of his anti-H.I.V. strategy, a top administration official involved in developing the plan who spoke on condition of anonymity gave me a remarkably frank answer. “Some people use condoms, some people don’t,” the official said. “You can’t offer condoms to people who don’t want them.”

Collapse of Hollywood Sex Abuse Cases Raise Questions About Ethics, Legality

Interesting piece by Sharon Waxman in The Wrap about this so-called Hollywood pedophilia sex ring. My friend Herndon Graddick, who is a former president of GLADD, isn't buying it:
“The notion of what he's [lawyer Jeff Herman, who filed the suits on behalf of Michael Egan in Hawaii] proposing — a gay Hollywood sex ring that trafficked in rape of minors, is a homophobic fantasy. This is the oldest homophobic trope in the book, that gay people tolerate abuse of minors. I can't believe there has ever been a group of gay men in Hollywood standing around watching children be raped. I find that absolutely ludicrous."
Graddick said that the rapid filing and dismissal of the cases will make sexual abuse cases more difficult to stick. “I am a survivor of child abuse,” he said. “I will say that for Michael Egan to level these false charges suggesting he was a victim of abuse that didn't occur is an affront to every abuse victim seeking justice. It makes it harder for real abuse victims to seek justice.”
The suits are dropping like flies, but not until people's reputations are smeared and the media shoots its wad over the dirty gays.
