Weekend Tennis Roundup

A breakthrough win for Lorenzo Musetti; a return to form for Casper Ruud; titles for Irina-Camelia Begu and a red-hot Bernarda Pera; plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post. Read my full report BELOW.

Lorenzo Musetti let slip five championship points in the second set of the Hamburg Open final on Sunday before regrouping to defeat top seed Carlos Alcaraz 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4, for the 20--year-old Italian's first ATP Tour title.

The champion, who rises to a career-high No. 31 in the world, had come a long way since saving two match points in his first-round match against Dusan Lajovic. The night before that match, Musetti said he was up throughout the night due to food poisoning.

The fourth final was the charm this season for Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. After falling short in their first three tour-level finals of the year, the British-Finnish duo lifted their first ATP Tour trophy of the season on Sunday when they defeated fourth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Matwe Middelkoop 6-2, 6-4 to win in Hamburg. The unseeded duo did not lose a set at the ATP 500.

Casper Ruud engineered a mid-match turnaround at the Swiss Open on Sunday to complete a 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 victory against Matteo Berrettini for the crown. The defense of the Norwegian title was a nice turnaround after a month of poor results following his surprise run to the final of the French Open.

Tomislav Brkic and Francisco Cabral captured the doubles crown in Gstaad with a 6-4, 6-4 championship match victory against Robin Haase and Philipp Oswald.

In the "This Is Getting Out of Hand" department, Croatian-American Bernarda Pera stunned top-seeded Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-4 to win the Hamburg Open on Saturday for her second title in seven days. The 81st-ranked Pera, who won her first WTA title in Budapest last week, saved three of the four break points she faced and took four of the six she created to beat Kontaveit, who is ranked No. 2 in the world for no apparent reason.

And Irina-Camelia Begu beat Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-2 to win the Palermo Ladies Open on Sunday and claim her first singles title in five years. The sixth-seeded Romanian is having a great season, having reached the fourth round at this year’s French Open.
