Song of the Day: 'Favourite' by Bananarama

If you had told me in high school that I would be a little lukewarm about a new Bananarama single because it sounds a bit too much like Madonna, I'd have probably choked on my Mug-O-Lunch. But the second I started to play the first single from the forthcoming “Masquerade” LP by Sara and Keren, it reminded me of an outtake from one of Ms. Ciccone’s inferior albums, "MDNA." (The attempted rhyming of “Paris” and “embarrassed” rang a particularly cringeworthy bell!) So first I checked to see if there was a common producer -- it's a very distinctive sound, but not in a good way like Stock-Aitken-Waterman cranked out back when. No dice. (At the helm is Ian Masterson, the same guy who produced their previous three albums and doesn’t appear to have ever worked with Madonna.) So then I searched online to see what others were saying. Turns out nearly everyone was making the Madonna comparison, only they were saying it was like something off "Madame X," which I haven't gotten around to listening to yet. Either way, I'm sure I'll eventually warm up to "Favourite," just as I came to appreciate songs like "Falling Free" and "Turn Up the Radio." But here's hoping the rest of the new album comes across a bit less mechanical.

P.S. A friend informs me this is actually a cover of a song written and recorded by Sara's daughter, who goes by the moniker Alice D. Listen HERE. (It doesn't sound anything like Madonna!)

It's just boring. Here's why it's NOT like 'Madame X' - it is not as heavily auto-tuned There isn't a note on Madonna's last album that wasn't run through an auto-tuner 4-5 times. While this song is boring, Madonna's last disk was just BAD.
