Song of the Day: 'Everything' by Jody Watley

Everyone loves to talk about one-hit wonders. But I've always found few-hit-wonders -- artists who seemed to rule the charts for a year or two but then suddenly all but vanish -- to be the most fascinating people in music. (Were they thinking they were set for life? Buying houses they wound up not being able to afford? So many questions.) Former Shalamar singer Jody Watley is a perfect example, having scored six Top 10 singles in two years before rapidly fading away. (Does she at least do the Gay Pride circuit?) "Looking for a New Love" and "Real Love" were her biggest -- both hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the R&B chart. But today's SOTD, her downtempo ode to the lovelorn, was always my everything where she was concerned.

P.S.

By a show of hands, who else thought it was Sade in the "Do They Know It's Christmas?" video back in high school?

A.) Sade is British and had just had a smash with "Smooth Operator" when the charity single came out. (Jody is American.)

And ...

B.) Jody didn't become a household name or face in the U.S. until three years later, so how were we to know who she was? (Apparently she was quite popular across the pond, where Shalamar had a string of hits leading up to "Do They Know It's Christmas?")

Back in the day I did like Shalamar, a lot. I'm surprised I never got a Jody album.
