Weekend Tennis Diary

Simona Halep made a triumphant return to the game, defeating Elise Mertens for the Prague crown yesterday, 6-2, 7-5, It was her second successive title, albeit six months apart. The world number two said she will announce today whether or not she will fly to New York for the "Cincinnati" and U.S. Open events. (With Belinda Bencic officially out, the biggest U.S. event is now without three of its four semifinals from last year.)

Update: Halep is not playing the U.S. Open

American Jennifer Brady won her first WTA title on Sunday, defeating Jil Teichmann, 6-3, 6-4, at the Top Seed Open in Lexington, K.Y. The tournament saw the return of Serena Williams, who won two close three-setters before losing in a third-set tiebreak to Shelby Rogers in the quarters. (It's not every day you see a player use hand sanitizer and then present the trophy to herself!)
