Weekend Tennis Diary

Reuters reports that France's Fiona Ferro became the first WTA champion in five months on Sunday as she overpowered Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 7-5 to win the Palermo Ladies Open, the first Tour event to be staged since the coronavirus epidemic shut down the sport. By all accounts, it was a good trial run for the upcoming U.S. circuit. There were strict health protocols, including limited number of fans and no handshakes between players after the match. Players and officials underwent virus tests every four days and one player who tested positive pulled out of the tournament last weekend.

All eyes are now on Lexington, Ky., where Serena Williams is the top seed in a field that also includes Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, sister Venus, Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens and Amanda Anisimova. And Prague, which features Simona Halep and Petra Martic,
