Song of the Day: 'Cars' by Gary Numan

In honor of Gary Numan's 62nd birthday yesterday, I give you "Cars," which along with "The Model" by Kraftwerk were likely the first New Wave songs many of us were exposed to. "Cars" reached the U.S. Top 10 in 1979 while "The Model" failed to chart on the U.S. Hot 100 the previous year, but reached No. 39 on the Hot Club Play list. In addition to helping to introduce me to synth music, Numan was the first person I'd ever heard of having a hair transplant, something I was convinced I would need in short order given my family history of baldness. Four decades later and I'm still holding on!

I had Gary Neuman's Cars album. I remember all the boys wore smokey eye shadow in the early 80's.

Let's not forget David Bowie released the synth--and all-around--masterpiece Low two years before ;-)
