Song of the Day: 'I Can't Wait' by Stevie Nicks

One of the best things about Spotify is that I have complete access to virtually every album by artists I liked but couldn't afford to buy everything by as a kid. As a result, I'm making up for a lot of lost time -- which is what I tell people when they chastise me for not listening to new music. (I am listening to new music -- well, new to me!).While I had the first two Stevie Nicks solo albums back in the day, I never got the ones that came after. Do any hardcore Stevie fans want to weigh in? Figured I would go chronologically -- and am enjoying "Rock a Little" a lot on the treadmill these days. Next up: "The Other Side of the Mirror" in its entirety.

Chronologically does not work in her favour, as the quality of her voice deteriorates.....as does some of the material. 'Rock a Little' has some ok material and some BOMBS. ("I Sing for the Things"). "Rooms on Fire" is by far the best thing on "Mirror" (which has THE worst cover of "I Still Miss Someone" - it's almost unrecognizable).

And while not her best song by far, "I Can't Wait" still works. I'm not sure why, but it does.

Rock A Little is a good album- not on the same level as Bella Donna or The Wild Heart, but some good tracks. I think you'll enjoy The Other Side Of The Mirror- Rooms On Fire is a great track and there are some other good ones on there. Street Angel you will have to pick your favorites, but Blue Denim is a classic Stevie song. You will love Trouble in Shangri-La, can't wait to read your take on it.

Rock a Little is one of my favs from the Stevie solo chronicles. Maybe because I had just started driving so the cassette was on a constant loop in my first car. But if we're being honest, it's also when the train really started to come off the tracks. When she's truly trying to belt, you can hear the cracks in the armor (which I actually like). Often, the backup singers are filling in the gaps. This is also when she starts to sometimes whisper-talk her way through versus. Stevie admits she has little memory of the supporting tour, and entered rehab right after. Tellingly, Stevie's third album was actually supposed to be Mirror, Mirror. Those sessions went so poorly, the completed album was scrapped altogether. Many of the songs would eventually end up scattered across other albums and soundtracks. Being a longtime reader, the one I suspect you'd appreciate most is her cover of Olivia's Tied Up, which is out there on YouTube somewhere. As you make your way into Other Side of the Mirror listen for Cry Wolf, a Laura Branigan cover. And Bob Dylan's Just Like a Woman on Street Angel. I think covers are the clue things were not going well in Stevie land during this stretch.
