Postcard 'From' Indian Wells

Things are really getting going in Indian Wells this weekend, with seeded players finally playing. Unseeded Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka shook off the cobwebs to win their first matches -- and Serena scratched out a second victory over a tricky Kiki Bertens. Will be more interested in Vika's next match against "underdog" U.S. Open champ Sloane Stephens. (Wasn't that an Aussie Open semifinal not that long ago?) Novak Djokovic is also playing again for the first time since losing Down Under, supposedly having had something done to fix his trick elbow. (Seems like if this mysterious procedure he had done were so effective he would have had it before his January comeback, no?

Every year I say I'm finally going to attend Indian Wells but it never quite works out. (Timing's bad this year because Damian and I are headed to Tucson in a couple weeks for my brother Bill's posthumous induction in the University of Arizona Journalism School Hall of Fame.)

Everyone says the tournament is incredible for the players and fans. And if these pictures are any indication, you really can get up close and personal with the players -- although I must say I doubt I'll ever top my run-ins with ROGER FEDERER and NOVAK DJOKOVIC!
