Splendor in the Grass

While joking about lesbians on the women's tennis and golf tours has been around since, well, the formation of women's tennis and golf tours, my friend Tim Teeman learned there was a lot of living on the down-low back in the day when he caught up with the widow of record-holding golf champion Sandra Spuzich, winner of the 1966 U.S. Women's Open, who died last month. In this moving interview, Joyce Kazmierski recalls their relationship, sexism in golf and the secrecy of lesbian life on tour. Read HERE.

I think she downplayed the number of promient players who were gay and closeted: Sandra Haynie (later a partner of Martina), Mickey Wright, Kathy Whitworth, Pat Bradley, Amy Alcott and Hollis Stacy, all Hall of Fameers.

Very interesting, but don't think Joyce was ignoring them. Probably either didn't know, or in the moment didn't talk about them. I hope they all had a riot together!
