Song of the Day: 'Harper Valley P.T.A.' by Jeannie C. Riley

Rolling Stone's chart flashback takes me back to this 1968 classic that made Jeannie C. Riley the first woman to top both Billboard's Hot 100 and the U.S. Hot Country Singles charts with the same song. (It wouldn't happen again until Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" in early 1981.) Was just lamenting the death of the storytelling single -- "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," "Indiana Wants Me," "Fancy" and "Ode to Billie Joe" are other favorites -- but had nearly forgotten about this one, which also inspired the great but short-lived Barbara Eden television series of the same name.

Speaking of being stuck in the past: My CD player broke recently and although I listen to most of my music via an iPod dock, I don't have my massive collection entirely ripped, so I bought an inexpensive replacement last night.
