Song of the Day: 'Treat Her Right' by the BlueBonnets

Here's a great track from the BlueBonnets' acclaimed new album, "Play Loud," available now HERE. The video was recorded during the band's two recent shows here in New York City, both of which were jam-packed including some celebrity attendants. Opening night at Arlene's Grocery was my first time seeing the former Go-Go's bassist Kathy Valentine's current band and I must say I was blown away. I was a fan of her Delphines material, but never saw the BlueBonnets in their first incarnation, and was a tad leery of the revamped version because of their "blues" moniker. But the truth is the Austin four-piece -- made up of Valentine (guitar/vocals), Dominique Davalos (lead vocals/bass), Eve Monsees (guitar/vocals) and Kristy McInnis (drums/vocals) -- are really just a pop-rock band, and a really skilled one at that. Davalos' powerful voice has some blues quality to it -- they don't cover this Roy Head song for nothin', and you should hear her release her inner-Tina on "Nutbush City Limits"! -- but used with the more power-pop material she writes with Valentine, they're more like the band that should have dominated the charts in the 1990s than the transgender Muddy Waters. The general public doesn't seem to be very interested in listening to songs by actual musicians these days, which is why the BlueBonnets seem to be swimming upstream in their attempt to achieve the acclaim they seem worthy of. But if you're someone who appreciates old-school rock music, I'd strongly suggest giving the BBs a listen. Their equally good debut long play, "Boom Boom Boom Boom," is available HERE.

Girls gone wild

In addition to meeting Kathy's main gay, Joseph, I also got to hang at the second show at the Rock Shop in Brooklyn with other friends of hers including "Daily Show" co-creator Lizz Winstead, writer/actor Frank Conniff (aka Frank on "Mystery Science Theater 3000"), and former Blondie bassist Nigel Harrison, who was filled with band gossip!
