Divine Inspiration

The Film Society just announced a John Waters retrospective in September -- and I can't wait!
Get ready for some of the "filthiest people alive" heading once again to the big screen. The Film Society of Lincoln Center will celebrate legendary director and personality John Waters's five decades in filmmaking with a complete retrospective, the first in the United States. The event, titled Fifty Years of John Waters: How Much Can You Take?, will be comprised of his 12 features, including "Pink Flamingos," "Female Trouble," "Polyester," "Hairspray," "Serial Mom," and his first two, "Mondo Trasho" and "Multiple Maniacs," which introduced the world to his iconic muse Divine (Harris Glenn Milstead). The series will kick off with a special opening-night presentation of "Female Trouble "(1974) followed by a discussion with John Waters and critic J. Hoberman. That same evening, Waters will introduce his 1994 feature, "Serial Mom."

1971 -- The Stud, San Francisco: me at the North end of the bar, close to a long-haired Harvey Milk, Divine and/or Sylvester, neither in drag, at the South End. Best music system in the WORLD, replacing the juke box I used to use to manipulate the mood in the room.
They say Carlos Santana would come in to listen.
