ACT UP Co-Founder Carl Goodman Commits Suicide

Carl, right, with hubby Mario in 2000

It's always sad when someone takes his life. But for someone who lived through the AIDS crisis before the invention of the cocktail to do it, it's especially perplexing. Still, if this was something that he seriously considered and wanted to do -- not a fleeting thought that he could not turn back from once he jumped -- one has to respect his wishes. AIDS survivors are like former prisoners of war, and I don't think any of us can understand what they went through unless we've been through it, too. RIP, Carl.

UPDATE: Another person who knew Carl says he suffered from mental illness.
