The guys and I have mutual friends -- you've probably heard New York City is the world's largest small town -- and one of them passed along this statement for me to share, from Randi Cohen, Michael’s mother; Greg and Scott Cohen, Michael’s brothers; and Jason Mitchell Kahn and Ben Sands, Michael’s best friends:
Words cannot express the magnitude of our grief over this tragedy. As we mourn the loss of Daniel, we simultaneously are surrounding Michael with love, light and support.
Thank you for the amazing outpouring of love, support and concern. As Michael begins the long road to physical and emotional recovery, we ask for privacy and respect during this impossibly difficult time.

The family of Daniel McClung has not finalized funeral services for their son. This information will be communicated to the media once arrangements are made. Michael remains hospitalized at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Burn Center.

Daniel's father is one of my colleagues at work (and in years past, was one of my professors when I was in school and post-graduate training). The family has gone into seclusion, and has asked that no one contact them until they contact us.
