Supreme Court Strikes Down Key Part of Voting Rights Act

Do you trust these states do to the right thing on their own?

This is a sad day for equality in America. I have a feeling this will have a more negative effect on elections than Citizens United. As this country becomes more divided, I'm beginning to think in cases involving civil rights and the like there should be a Supreme Court equivalent of the filibuster-fueled "supermajority," like requiring six justices to decide something. (I know, it doesn't make sense. But I'm upset.) A 5-4 ruling on something so important to democracy just seems so wrong. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) quickly said afterward that the “Senate will act” to address this fundamentally wrong decision, but we've heard Reid make these kinds of promises before ... like on acting on the filibuster. I guess five Justices felt that things had improved enough in over
47 years.
