I remember thinking about those pills a while after AIDS first hit the world's collective consciousness, as several of my friends' mothers hit the diet pills kinda hard back in the day. Crazy.
I remember when the AIDS crisis was just starting that the company announced that they weren't going to change the product's name. Yeesh.
The first time I saw the term AIDS (about a year after we first started hearing about the mysterious "gay cancer") was in an article in the Village Voice. I may be embellishing, but my memory is that it was by Larry Kramer and I initially couldn't figure out why Kramer was ranting over a candy dieting aid and what the candy dieting aid had to do with the disease. You would have to have been around at the time and been an occasional reader of the tabloids to understand just how ubiquitous those AYDS ads were. They were so ubiquitous that there was honest-to-God confusion before the AIDS crisis totally overwhelmed AYDS.
