Full-Court Smackdown

Rutgers Fires Coach Over Abuse and Slurs

Further evidence that we have reached a tipping point with anti-gay rhetoric and, I hope, discrimination (are you listening, SCOTUS?).

Via the NYT/NYP:
Mike Rice, the university’s men’s basketball coach, was dismissed Wednesday, a day after a video surfaced that showed him berating and kicking players at practice. The videos showed Rice taunting his players with offensive slurs used against gays, a scene that is likely to prove especially problematic for Rutgers. At one point in the video compilation, Rice is heard screaming at a player, “You f---ing fairy, you’re a f---ing f----t.” ]Rutgers' athletic director Tim] Pernetti said the slur was “at the core of the suspension.” Rice also calls Rutgers players “motherf-----s,” “p-----s,” “sissy b-----s” and “c---s.” Tyler Clementi was an 18-year-old freshman at Rutgers when he killed himself in 2010 after discovering that his roommate had secretly used a webcam to spy on his romantic interlude with another man.

To his credit, Rice is already calling himself an "embarrassment to his family." He's not the first person to do this, but here's hoping this high-profile example will be a lesson to everyone.
