Almost 'Golden'

Wow. I didn't realize how weak a year it had been for movies until I paged through the list of Golden Globe nominees. Sure, the good stuff is on there -- "Argo," Ben Affleck, "Silver Linings Playbook," Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence -- but the inclusion of Meryl Streep for "Hope Springs" (which an ardent Streep fan friend of mine said was the worst movie she's ever made), Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams (in the god-awful "Master"), Helen Mirren in that OK but blink-and-you'll-forget-you-saw-it "Hitchcock," Nicole Kidman (in the over-the-top campfest "The Paperboy"), and Quentin Tarantino ... period, definitely isn't impressive. See the full list HERE..

I wonder if your friend has seen MAMA MIA is he thinks anything else is Meryl Streep's worst movie. I enjoyed HOPE SPRINGS and thought both Streep and Tommy Lee Jones were outstanding. Judging by the trailer, you'd think it was going to be a borderline-smutty comedy of marital dysfunction but it was actually a sensitive, low-key dual character study with *moments* of comedy. It wasn't revolutionary but it certainly was a feast for fans of acting. (Here's EW's more-convincing B+ review: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20589920,00.html)
