From breaking stories to 'Breaking Bad'
I know the newspaper industry has been tough on its employees, but this one takes the cake. According to WJLA, 44-year-old Leonard Fischer (above) and 31-year-old William Hudgens (roommates? boyfriends?) were arrested for running a meth lab out of an apartment in Arlington, Va. Fischer is a former tech reporter for Gannett News Service whose byline frequently appeared in USA Today. Not sure if he was laid off or not, but that sure would be one creative way to invest your buyout money. Sad to see yet another gay man felled by meth.
UPDATE: Fischer's LinkedIn page still shows him working for Gannett, which doesn't necessarily mean anything. Supplemental income, perhaps?
UPDATE 2: Gannett Spokeswoman Katie Connell confirms that Fischer is no longer a Gannett employee.

I used to work with Leonard. He might have taken one of the very early buyouts, but he's definitely been gone from Gannett for a while.
I worked with Leonard waaaay back in the late 80s/early 90s at the student newspaper at Indiana U. We did not exactly hit it off - I think he annoyed many with his delusions of grandeur - but I ran into him a few years later in Minneapolis and he couldn't have been nicer. Remember: innocent until proven guilty!
I worked with Leonard during the early part of the century (that seems strange to say.)
I always found him enjoyable to work with.
I hope he gets his personal issues in order.
