RIP, Mr. Jefferson

Sorry to read that Sherman Hemsley has died at 74. I never really watched "The Jeffersons" much, but he and Isabel Sanford (Mrs. Jefferson) were simply brilliant on "All in the Family," always knowing just how to deal with neighbor Archie Bunker, creating one of the greatest relationships in television history (Weezy, attempting to be patient; George, as anti-white as Archie was anti-black). Although storage is very limited in my third-floor walk-up, it will be all I can do to not buy “All in the Family: The Complete Series,” an 86-pound, 28 DVD set coming out this October, which will reportedly contain not only all 213 episodes of “All in the Family,” but the series pilot, “Justice For All,” the second pilot, “Those Were the Days” and the pilots for spinoffs “Gloria,” “Archie Bunker’s Place” and “704 Hauser.” (Michael Starr reports that it will also include a 40-page collective book, a new interview with series creator Norman Lear and the documentaries “Those Were The Days: The Birth of ‘All in the Family’ ” and “The Television Revolution Begins: ‘All in the Family’ is On the Air.”) RIP, Mr. Jefferson. You will definitely live on in television history ... those were the days.
