Pier Support

If you have gay friends of a certain age as I do, then you know about the legendary sexual shenanigans that used to take place on the piers along the West Side of Lower Manhattan. While not quite as titillating, this rare Super 8 mm footage from 1976 shows that even by day, the piers were a place for gay men to gather and cruise -- and maybe even fall in love. Watch Nelson Sullivan's fascinating 2.5-minute film to see for yourself -- a lesson in homo anthropology like you've never witnessed before:

1970s gay NYC is fascinating.

Pre-internet and AIDS...a completely different world.

Great film footage of the piers...thanks!

Wow. Crazy. Doesn't look like a very comfortable place to lay out in the sun. And probably smelled like fish!
