A weekly look at what's making news in the free gay mags:
Next features the return of "Rent" this week, with interviews with three "Rentheads" who have collectively seen the show about 140 times. I'm happy the beloved musical is returning to off-Broadway for a new generation to see and love. I saw it back in the '90s and appreciated it, but perhaps not in the way people younger than me did. Perhaps it's not surprising that my reaction to '80s-centric "Taboo" seemed to mirror most people's reaction to "Rent" -- I actually loved the much-maligned show and found it emotional and moving -- and told Boy George once that for me, "Taboo" was my "Rent," to which he replied, "I"ve never seen 'Rent.'" (Oh.) There's an online-only interview with the revival's sexy new Roger -- Matt Shingledecker -- HERE.
Just Us Boys (do not open at work) has some nice stories in its Coming Out issue including cover man Cole Streets, who now seems like the kind of guy who'd pick a newbie up on his first night in a bar and f**k hell out of him. (Lucky guy.)
Odyssey New York mails it in with this advertorial cover of "Priscilla Queen of the Desert," Broadway's ho-hum adaptation of the wonderful 1994 flick.
