In Many Markets, Ellen Tries to Fill Oprah's Big Shoes

With the end of Oprah Winfrey's behemoth mega-successful talk show in May, there's been much talk about who the "next Oprah" was going to be -- and who's going to keep the strong lead-in to the 5 o'clock local news. Anderson Cooper and Katie Couric are preparing to step into the breach, but in many markets, already-tested Ellen DeGeneres is being put into the high-pressure 4 p.m. time slot. My friend Johnny Diaz covers media in Boston, and got to interview the lovable lesbian, who seems to be taking it all in stride in typical Ellen fashion:

“Because it’s Oprah’s old time slot, I guess a lot of people will be watching, and then they will figure out slowly that I’m not Oprah," she said. "But hopefully for a little while, they will keep watching, thinking they are watching Oprah and then go, ‘Wait a minute!’ and then I will already have them."
