F. Dunaway, Apt. 10
I was surprised when a well-placed friend of mine sent me an e-mail yesterday with the alarming subject: "Faye Dunaway's getting evicted -- here's the document"! But I was away from my computer, and viewing the PDF on my phone was more trouble than it was worth, so I went to bed not really knowing the full story, but saddened that yet another big star had mismanaged her money and fallen on hard times. (I was a HUGE Faye Dunaway fan growing up, and consider her one of the last true movie stars.) When I finally read the story in today's New York Times, however, it suddenly seemed like quite the non-story. It turns out Dunaway keeps a modest rental in New York City but actually lives on the West Coast, where she owns a home in West Hollywood. But like an alarmingly high number of well-to-do people, she managed to secure a rent-stabilized apartment -- which are intended for people of modest incomes -- and now her landlord is seeking to have her evicted not because she can't afford the rent -- just $1,048.72 a month for a one-bedroom on the Upper East Side -- but because the city states that rent-stabilized apartments must be primary residences. Her landlord has presented a strong case that Dunaway actually lives in Los Angeles, and frankly I'm fine with her getting the boot for breaking the rules, even if he's likely doing it because he can hike the rent each time someone moves out. (No word on whether she intends to fight the eviction petition, but I would KILL to see her reaction to it all!) Note to Faye: I hear they've got some great deals down in Chinatown.
