'Mildred Pierce' Serves Up Stars in NYC

I'm sorry I missed last night's star-studded premiere for HBO's "Mildred Pierce," at the Ziegfield -- I'd have rather cut off my hand! The five-part miniseries -- starring Kate Winslet (in the role that earned Joan Crawford her sole Oscar) and Evan Rachel Ward (as ingrate daughter Veda), as well as a winning supporting cast including Guy Pearce, Mare Winningham and Hope Davis -- looks surprisingly good (to me) considering my general lack of enthusiasm for Winslet and Ward (don't dislike either, but we can't love everyone and neither of them has ever been a fave of mine), who seem more than a bit miscast as mother/daughter given the fact that Winslet is less than 12 years older. My feelings about director Todd Haynes are somewhat more favorable: thought "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story" -- a 43-minute short acted out by Barbies that I saw in Georgetown while I was in college -- was the most brilliant thing ever, while "Far From Heaven" seemed like it was so close yet, indeed, so far from living up to its potential. All that said, the first installment of "Mildred Pierce" airs March 27 and I will be there. Check out the new trailer down below.
    Guy Pearce and Kate Winslet
Evan Rachel Wood brings a little va-va-vroom to the party!
Mare "it was the best peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich that I have had in my entire life" Winningham
   Cheyenne Jackson (of course!)
Victor Rasuk and Bryan Greenberg, cute stars of HBO's "How to Make It in America"
Steve Buscemi and Gretchen Mol of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire"
Melissa Leo and Mariska Hargitay (god, shouldn't her childhood be a movie too?!)
