Sci-fi and blockbusters rank high on my list of movies to avoid, but with "Back to the Future" showing for months at the AMC Fiesta Village I worked at in high school, it was hard not to get swept up in this one. (A seems-funny-now crush on Michael J. Fox didn't hurt, either.) Hard to believe it would take 25 years to find out that Eric Stolz was originally cast as Marty McFly, but was replaced by the "Family Ties" star after five weeks of filming left director Robert Zemeckis felt "something was missing." (I was never a huge fan of Stolz, either, although I would end up loving him in the short-lived Showtime series "Out of Order.") This is one of the biggest big screen replacements that I can recall -- a smaller one was Woody Allen's revolving cast of "September" -- can you think of any bigger ones?

I can think of these: Harvey Keitel being replaced by Martin Sheen after weeks of shooting Apocalypse Now, and Mick Jagger replaced by Klaus Kinski in Herzog's Fitzcaraldo. But this one was quite the secret!

There were two recastings in THE HOURS. Zeljko Ivanek filmed scenes as Louis Waters with Meryl Streep, only to be replaced with Jeff Daniels later in production. All scenes between Louis and Clarissa were subsequently re-shot. Betsy Blair played the role of the older Laura Brown inthe scenes at the end of the film with Meryl Streep, but, director Stephen Daldry was dissatisfied and decided to refilm the part with Julianne Moore playing both the young and older Laura Brown. Her scenes (with Streep) were filmed almost a year after the production had finished...and by this time she was pregnant in real life (as the younger Laura, she wore a prostetic pegnant stomach).
Linda Blair was originally cast as Shirley McClaine's daughter in Terms of Endearment and filmed several scenes. It was later found out that she had posed nude for a French magazine Oui and Shirley had her removed from the film.
