Invitation Only

If you'd told me in 1981 that one day Tracy Austin and Kathy Rinaldi -- two of my child hood idols (god bless the Prince Woodie!) -- would one day play doubles at Wimbledon against Jana Novotna and Martina Navratilova, it would have made my life so much easier. Sadly, my girls lost 7-5, 6-0 to the Lesbian Czechers in the Ladies Invitational Doubles final -- which attracted some of the biggest names to date -- but it did not take away from my happiness knowing that the day before, Austin and Rinaldi had stunned Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova -- who actually paired to win two Grand Slam titles back in the day -- 7-5, 7-6(4), to complete a clean sweep of their Group A round robin, having already beaten British duo Anne Hobbs and Samantha Smith, and Helena Sukova and Andrea Temesvari.

(Novotna and Navratilova also enjoyed an unbeaten run to the final. They defeated fellow Group B teams Annabel Croft and Magdalena Maleeva, Ilana Kloss and Rosalyn Nideffer, and 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martínez and 1998 runner-up Nathalie Tauziat.)

Speaking on the BBC later, Austin revealed that the ever-evil Chucky had told her at the net: "I hope I play as well as you when I'm your age."
