Page 1 Consider (10/21)

  • Duets: Every magazine will tell you that lists sell -- and music lists are my fave. Spinner's 10 Worst Duets Ever is HERE (Justin & Madonna I'm OK with, but Huey & Gwyneth? I LOVE that song!). The best list is HERE and I love that Iggy & Kate and Marvin & Tammi are on there. And their Number 1 pick couldn't have been more dead on!

  • Gut Instincts: Something tells me there's an error in this story about noninvasive weight-loss surgery. It says:: "Karleen Perez is 5-foot-9 and weighs 289 pounds, for a body mass index of 42 -- though her height AND GENEROUS FRAME help hide the weight. Her family, friends and boyfriend say she looks just fine." I'm thinking it should have said "though her height and GENEROUS FAMILY, FRIENDS AND BOYFRIEND say she looks just fine." (NYT)

  • GOP White Flight: You know the GOP is in the crapper when even white supremacist organizations are backing Obama. David Duke has written positively about an Obama administration, and James Knowles, a former Ku Klux Klan member who was convicted in a 1981 lynching, said in a Discovery Channel documentary by Ted Koppel that Obama was a potentially acceptable candidate. "People need to vote for him because of his ideas and the veracity that he displays in what he does, and not because he’s African-American." (NYT)

  • Bar Bailout: Good news for my two lesbian readers. The financially strapped lezzie watering hole Rubyfruit Bar and Grill, which takes its name from the Rita Mae Brown novel "Rubyfruit Jungle," has been given a lifeline and won't be closing after all. This story about the joint, however, is so packed with hilarious characters that I'm ready to head over to toss a few back! (Is that allowed, ladies?) (NYT)

  • Dr. Homo: Aetna and the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) announced that Aetna has become the first health benefits company in the U.S. to link its online provider directory to GLMA’s growing online database of more than 1,200 health care providers. The database includes primary care providers, specialists, therapists, and dentists who welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) patients. (Courant)

  • Gay Icons: In recognition of GLBT History Month, get to (better) know Tony Kushner, Rosie O'Donnell, Philip Johnson, E.M. Forster, Randy Shilts and Allen Ginsberg, this week's honorees. (GLBT History Month)

  • California Dreamin'? Maybe there's hope yet: More than a dozen pastors Monday stood on the steps of San Francisco City Hall, where the fight for same-sex marriage in California began four years ago, to urge Californians to reject a ballot measure that would make gay marriage illegal. (365Gay)

  • RIP: Ben Weider, who with his brother Joe brought bodybuilding into the international spotlight by organizing professional competitions like Mr. Olympia and by grooming stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, died Friday in Montreal. He was 85. (NYT)

  • From Rags to Bitches: Mr. Blackwell died Sunday at 86. While my condolences go out to his loved ones, I think he would be happy to know that even in death his sharp tongue could still leave a room in stitches: When I read a few of his famous acerbic lines mentioned in his obit last night at work -- "Poor Elizabeth Taylor looks like two small boys fighting under a mink blanket" and "Martha Stewart dressed like a centerfold from the Farmer’s Almanac" -- well, it became clear that the one-time child prostitute would be dearly missed. (NYT)

I seem to recall in his autobiography, Mr. Blackwell writing about having a huge penis. Who knew?

If anyone's talking worst duets and don't list Fred Schneider of the B-52's and Patti LaBelle at number one then they haven't done their homework. If it were possible to take an ice pick to your own brain and carve out memories, their duet is in the top ten things I would scrape out...

Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis' duet should NOT be on that list. Their duet is beautiful, I LOVE IT!
