Scritti Politti's 'Perfect Way'

I got into a bit of a debate with ex-Fugazi drummer/producer Brendan Canty over the weekend about the merits of Brian Wilson. He told me he makes a conscious effort to fight the hero worship (I let it flow freely), then strongly recommended I give more attention to Green Gartside, aka Scritti Politti. Scritti Politti? I remember them (him?) as an '80s one-hit wonder (the delightful "Perfect Way," above). Is this really a worthy heir to Wilson's throne? To hear The New York Times talk about him -- and Brendan -- maybe so. Perhaps I have some catching up to do ...

The lyrics to Perfect Way make no sense, but it is one of the greatest songs ever written.

love ya, Kenneth ... but Green Gartside, aka Scritti Politti, as heir to Brian Wilson? No way. Show me another Pet Sounds, and then .... maaybeeeee ... til then, Brian remains The Hero.

I only remember that one song, and though it was fun, it didn't strike me as genius. Hmmm...

Ken, Scritti and Green (same thing) are back and released a new album last year which contains some of their best work. Green's voice has always been one of my favouites.
