Marat Safin tried every trick in the Nadia Comaneci Handbook and still came up a straight sets loser to Janko Tipsarevic, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. French favorite Richard Gasquet also lost in straights, to Belgian Kristof Vliegen, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-1. And Robby Ginepri, the one remaining American in the men's draw, put up a valiant fight before going down in five to Argentine Diego Hartfield, 6-4, 1-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. No major upsets in the women's draw, although 2004 champion Anastasia Myskina's 6-1, 6-0 loss to Gainey Ranch 2001 ladies' club champion American Meghann Shaughnessy in the first round has to be one of the saddest results in the open era.

It's a sad day for me, as my 2 favorite pretties (Marat and Robby) both lost at the French Open. I think Robby more than Marat needs a life coach, and I'm volunteering for the position.
