Night at the Theater: 'Judy and Me'

Michael and I saw "Judy and Me," last night at the St. Luke's Theater, Judy Garland impersonator Peter Mac's love letter to the legendary singer and actress. The highly autobiographical story centers around a fey Long Island teen who has imaginary conversations with Liza's mom as an escape from his abusive school life and monster father. While the show's campy feel belies its hard-hitting themes of domestic abuse, homophobia and hate crimes, the overall effect is sweet and touching. Christopher Brick does a nice job as the misfit teen, Tony Castalano, and Jean Ann Kump is the best actor of the bunch as Tony's clueless and protective mom. But it's Peter Mac who delivers all of the best lines (naturally) as Judy, who sees endless similarities between Tony's dreadful classmates and life on the lot at MGM. If you're a friend of Dorothy, you'll get a kick out of "Judy and Me."
