Weekend in New England

Damian and I had a wonderful time visiting our friends Christopher and Augusten at their charming 1780 (1783 or 1820, depending where you look) Connecticut farmhouse over the weekend. Eight acres and four dogs meant there was never a dull moment -- there was a river, water fall, bridle path, tongue baths and lap dances -- yet it was the most relaxing weekend we've had since finding out my brother was sick. Good food, great friends and our pets are about all we have in life, so cheers to them all.

Return to the Brooklyn Book Festival

Had a hoot attending this year's Brooklyn Book Festival with my friend Leah, herself an accomplished memoirist. This excusion is getting to be a habit with us -- we saw Benjamin Anastas ("Too Good to Be True") and Eric Erlandson of Hole speak about their memoirs in 2012, plus the great Nile Rodgers --  and then last year I got to talk about mine. Yesterday we saw panel dubbed Modern Families featuring -- you guessed it -- memoirists Charles Blow, Kate Bolick, Augusten Burroughs and Robert Christgau, in which the writers debated the merits of Tolstoy's famous quote: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” While the jury's still out on the answer to that one, all four had interesting insights about the writing process, memories and how much is too much to share. (We found out one them had a "narcotized" penis in his 20s, so that tells you everything you need to know about the third one!)

Later, we perused the various exhibition booths then had lunch in The Heights, before walking down to the park on one of the most glorious days of the year yet. If you haven't attended the Brooklyn Book Festival, definitely look into next September. I've been three times and have always come away impressed -- and if nothing else, you get this:

"BrickJest" -- a collaboration between Kevin Griffith, an English professor at Capital University, and his 11-year-old son -- in which they reenact scenes from David Foster Wallace's "Infinite Jest" with Lego blocks is the greatest thing ever. One of the characters -- pre-avatars -- looked exactly like me, even though it came with the game. Not Dry: Extra sweaty with Augusten Burroughs 

Had a nice time attending the 25th annual Lambda Literary Awards last night at the famed Great Hall at Cooper Union. Abraham Lincoln once spoke there, but I doubt he was nearly as funny as our evening's host, Kate Clinton, whose jokes were only topped by her priceless reactions. An eclectic group of presenters -- Edmund White, David France, Peter Staley, Jonathan Capehart, Randy Jones, Justin Vivian Bond, Frank Bruni, to name a few -- were on hand to give out the "Lammys," including special prizes for Augusten Burroughs, John Irving and Cherrie Moraga, who were recognized for their outstanding careers. And the legendary Janis Ian performed her landmark single "At Seventeen," which rings as true today as it did nearly 40 years ago. Congrats to all the winners and nominees. Full list HERE.

May 16 UPDATE: The Selectric flag flies at half-mast today for Rio. She was a big, beautiful sweetheart, and a valued agency employee (great at the door, needed work on the phone) who never missed a day of work. I imagine she'll be as popular in the afterlife as she was in Manhattan, but things sure won't be the same here without her.
