Happy Holigays!

As Damian and I rode down the West Side Highway in the back of a taxi last Sunday, en route to Chelsea Piers for the 2025 SAGE Toys Party, I found myself getting unexpectedly reflective. I turned to him and said that if you’d told “single and on the prowl” me back in the 1990s that I’d be attending this very same event some three decades later -- with my husband --  I’d have looked at you like you had two heads.

And yet, there we were.

Another wonderful night in service of a truly wonderful organization -- one that shows up, year after year, for LGBTQ seniors and children in need. SAGE does work that is both urgent and deeply human, offering advocacy, resources and care to elders who too often fall through the cracks, as well as support for younger people who need it most.

If you’re looking to make an end-of-the-year charitable donation, please consider supporting SAGE Advocacy Services for LGBTQ Elders.

And for more pictures from the night -- toys, smiles, nostalgia and all -- see BELOW.

Holigay Cheer

Just home from the 2024 SAGE Toys Party, benefiting LGBT seniors and children in need. I've been going to this event since the late '90s -- boy has it evolved! -- and it never disappoints, with hot boys gathering for such worthy causes. 🙏❤️🏳️‍🌈

Robby Brown, Real Estate Broker and LGBTQ Philanthropist, Dies of Covid-19 Complications at 72

Gay historian Mike Balaban writes:
Robby Brown survived AIDS in the 80s; he survived the cancer that had invaded his body the last several years; but, sadly, he couldn’t outlast the coronavirus and passed away tonight with (I’m told) several friends and his beloved golden lab, Lois, by his side.
Robby was one of a kind: a southern gentleman; a generous benefactor; a fount of organizational creativity (having been involved with the foundation of the Gay Games with Dr. Tom Waddell in 1982 and birthing NYC’s gargantuan gay Toys for Tots party in his east side one bedroom apartment in 1988); and a friend to countless new arrivals in NYC over the decades. It sounds trite to say it, but Robby will truly be sorely missed!
I always thought of Robby as “Mr. Gay NY” and don’t know what we’re going to do without him. :(
Robby was one of the most successful real estate brokers in NYC for decades. A few years ago, he was responsible for the most expensive apartment ever sold to that point in the city’s history: he befriended a gay billionaire in Splash disco and eventually persuaded him to buy TWO apartments on top of each other in the Time Warner Building overlooking Central Park, for a combined $75 million or so.
Despite being so successful, Robby was mild-mannered and accessible. Hailing from Kentucky, he was affable and even courtly. He supported causes across a wide spectrum, including several LGBTQ non profits whose boards I sat on.
I was introduced to Robby many years ago at a party at his home in the Hamptons by a mutual friend. Robby was a former competitive swimmer at Princeton who surrounded himself with beautiful boys -- news anchors Thomas Roberts and Bill Hemmer were also in attendance. And what he lacked in tact -- he could be very dismissive of people for whom he had no use -- he made up for in generosity. (I understand a documentary about his life was completed recently.) RIP.

Model Behavior?

My original headline for this was "When I Had the Nerve to Be Photographed Standing Next to Hottest Male Model Working"(!) -- but what makes running into Walter Savage at the SAGE Toys Party last night so ironic is that earlier in the day I had seriously contemplated unfollowing him on Instagram over this exchange with fellow model Kamil Nicalek that was left on a photo of the two men at a recent event:

Adding more irony to the whole thing is that Kamil -- who wasn't on "The Bachelor" but rather was the first one eliminated on this season of "The Bachelorette," a show I might add a gay friend of mine was also on -- was actually a bartender at Chelsea's legendary Splash, where he befriended none other than my boyfriend while building up his "social-media following." With Walter being a big supporter of SAGE it's hard to imagine he's homophobic in any meaningful way. But this need to "defend" someone from gay speculation -- and Kamil's "haters going to hate" retort -- shows we're still not quite where we want to be on LGBTQ issues, even with some of our allies.

P.S. I didn't say anything to him about it -- he seems like a decent guy -- but I do wish straight men could lighten up a bit about the G-word.

And need even more irony? Kamil just happened to be my Morning Wood two Wednesdays ago!

SAGE's 31st Annual Toys Party Benefits Young and Old

Had a great time -- per usual -- at SAGE's annual Toys Party last night at Chelsea Piers. Went with Greg and Chad, above, and then met up with Tim and Frank, in addition to running into a bunch of old friends. (Also met Fred Karger, who is taking on the very political Mormon church's tax-exempt status!) If you're not familiar with the great work the organization does for LGBT seniors and more, please visit them on the Web HERE.

Boy Toy Alert: Inside the 2015 SAGE Toys Party!

The 30th anniversary of SAGE's Toys Party benefit was as fun as ever, especially attending it with my friends Chad and Greg -- and catching up with my pal Tim and his new boyfriend. Although the December affair collects toys for needy children, SAGE's principal mission is to help LGBT seniors, which special guest Whoopi Goldberg reminded us we should all be so lucky to become! A big thank-you to hosts Robby Browne, Chris Kann and David Tufts. To donate or volunteer for SAGE, click HERE.

Greg was naughty, of course
