Matt Bomer Covers HIV Plus

I finally watched "The Normal Heart" the other night after missing the HBO premiere by being at a dance in Brooklyn. (I know!) It was a classic case of expectations are everything -- having seen and loved the play, mine were exceedingly high -- only I ended up hearing so many negative things about it that I would up being pleasantly surprised when I finally tuned in. One thing that did take me aback -- and my friends Chris and Brian mentioned this too -- was that the HIV Plus coverman's beauty was borderline distracting in the beginning of the film. (Crisis? What crisis? Is he gonna get naked? How can this person really exist?) I guess it's not his fault(!), but then the more I thought about it the more I realized his casting was intentional, as a metaphor for the generation of men -- many very young and very beautiful -- that was wiped out as the world sat by and yawned. Ryan Murphy famously ruined "Running With Scissors" and "Eat, Pray, Love." But I would say he at least broke even with Larry Kramer's masterpiece. If nothing else, successfully making the movie will introduce the work -- if not the entire subject -- to a massive audience who never got to see the theatrical version.

I think these red-carpet photos from last night's premiere of "The Normal Heart" at the Ziegfeld Theatre explain why I wasn't invited -- but NOT for lacking of trying. Cannot wait to see this monumental film, which premiieres May 25.

New York Times columnist Frank Bruni writes that with HBO's adaptation of "The Normal Heart," a complicated hero gets his due:

I dreaded Larry Kramer, and sometimes I even detested Larry Kramer, but always — always — I knew that he was on the side of the angels and that we needed him there, in all his unappeasable and obnoxious glory.

It took me a quarter-century to see the play, but I plan to watch the HBO adaptation of Larry Kramer's groundbreaking AIDS play, "The Normal Heart," when it premieres May 26. Hard to believe it's been nearly three decades from Barbra Streisand to Ryan Murphy getting this made. Read HERE.

Tim Riggins' Latest Superhero Role: Fighting AIDS!

Lainey Gossip has a cache of photos of Taylor Kitsch on the set of "The Normal Heart," the long-overdue film adaptation of Larry Kramer's groundbreaking play about the early days of AIDS. Kitsch plays Bruce Niles, a co-founder and early president of the Gay Men's Health Crisis alongside Ned, who is based on Kramer himself. 

Bruce Niles was based on Paul Popham, a decorated Vietnam veteran turned corporate go-getter who died of AIDS in 1987. Sadly, Kitsch's interpretation of the role does not include Niles' trademark mustache, which upped Lee Pace's sex appeal incredibly during the show's 2011 Broadway revival! Ryan Murphy is at the helm of this one, so here's hoping he doesn't fuck it up like every other adaptation he's ever touched.
