Weekend Tennis Roundup

In the battle of the 6-foot-5 hunks, Hubert Hurkacz made Polish history at the Winston-Salem Open on Saturday, beating Benoit Paire 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to capture his first ATP Tour trophy. The 22-year-old became the first Pole to capture a tour-level crown since Wojtek Fibak’s WCT Chicago title run in 1982. Hurkacz also became the 14th first-time ATP champion this year -- yet  the last time we had a first-time Grand Slam champion was 19 tournaments ago, when Marin Cilic won the 2014 U.S. Open.

An intermittent rain show made for some interesting moments ...

As did the cold weather, which prompted the lanky Pole to don an undershirt that gave the appearance of wearing a dickey!

And in the last women's tuneup before the U.S. Open, Polish qualifier Magda Linette came from a set down against Camila Giorgi to claim the first title of her career, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. Ranked No. 80 in the world, Linette had to fight through three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw of the maiden event in the Bronx. On her way to the final -- her eighth match of the week -- she had to fight past No. 9 seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich, No. 10 seed Karolina Muchova and No. 5 seed Katerina Siniakova before her clash with Giorgi.
