Terror Train

Wouldn't it be easier to simply post: I want all of you to know that I KNOW that all terrorists aren't Muslims? (Pat me on the back -- round of applause for ME!)

Seriously. What is this obsession my tribe has with calling gun-nut mass murderers "terrorists"? Different words have different meanings. If all people who terrorize people are terrorists, then the kid who followed me home from school threatening to kill me -- "terrorizing" me -- was also a terrorist, just like the Sept. 11 hijackers. He wasn't. He was a bully and also had no stated political agenda fueling his actions. (Should we stop using the term domestic violence and just call it terrorism, too?) I know many of you mean well. But sometimes it feels this desire to be so "woke" reduces us to the same nonexistent level of critical-thinking skills that we rail against.

Dylann Roof WAS a terrorist. Timothy McVeigh WAS a terrorist. James Holmes, Adam Lanza, Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold, Seung-Hui Cho and Jared Lee Loughner (despite who he shot) were mass murderers. (Look 'em up if you don't remember which is which and note the difference.) If you want to get into mental illness, I tend to think ANYONE who commits a mass act of violence is insane to some degree (or incredibly desperate) -- suicide bomber or the guy in Vegas. But planting bombs in the U.K. because you think it stole part of your country's land is different than shooting people at a movie theater for no apparent reason.

The U.S. has a GUN problem -- a problem that is uniquely AMERICAN. Why can't that be enough of a problem without taking our eye off the ball by trying to conflate it with other acts of inhumanity?

Overcompensation 101: In an effort to correct morons like Donald Trump who think all terrorists are Muslims (or is it all Muslims are terrorists?), so many smart people become too clever by half -- instead declaring that all white people who kill multiple people are terrorists. That's not what terrorism means.

Pulse Massacre Victims Remembered Outside Stonewall Inn

Attended Gays Against Guns' event this evening to celebrate those who were killed at the Pulse nightclub one year ago today. I must confess I became extremely emotional when the 49 people wearing white veils carrying photos of the victims walked by me. My cat Larry happened to die the same day of the massacre last year, so I was distracted with my own personal grief at the time and never really felt like I processed the horror of it all. Survivor Keinon Carter, who lost a brother to gun violence, gave a moving speech that got the water works going yet again. This organization is so right that the best way to honor the victims of this needless crime is with action. Vote against and any lawmaker who supports the NRA and learn about other ways to fight back HERE.

Gays Against Guns Takes to D.C. Mall on Saturday to Tell Tourists: 'Gun Business Is Killing America'

Powerful stuff from the grassroots group.

From a news release:

On Saturday, August 27, at 3:30pm, one hundred members of Gays Against Guns (GAG), a new direct-action group targeting the gun industry and lobby, will march from the MLK Jr. Memorial on the Mall to the Lincoln Memorial to tell thousands of visiting tourists that THE GUN BUSINESS IS KILLING AMERICA.

The group will carry signs and distribute thousands of flyers listing congressional incumbents nationwide backed by the National Rifle Association--and urging tourists to go home and campaign and vote against them.

"Even as mass shootings become more frequent in the U.S., investment and sales in assault weapons and high-capacity magazines rise," said John Grauwiler, cofounder of GAG-NY.

"That's not an accident," he continued. "It's the handiwork of the gun industry's Chain of Death, which encompasses investors like BlackRock and Cerberus; manufacturers like Smith & Wesson and Sturm, Ruger; retailers like Cabela's; their lobby puppets like the NRA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and their puppets in Congress, many of whom are facing shaky races in November.

Continued Grauwiler, "We're on the Mall Saturday to tell tourists about the amoral profiteers who are both stoking and benefiting from America's mass-shooting problem. It has to stop."

Part of the GAG action will be dozens of silent, solemn white-veiled figures carrying placards with the names and faces of those who've died in mass shootings such as those in Aurora, Colorado; Newtown, Connecticut; Charleston, South Carolina; and Orlando, Florida.

The veiled figures have been integral to GAG since the group debuted 800-strong at NYC's LGBT Pride March in June, just days after the June 12 mass shooting at the LGBT Pulse club in Orlando that took 49 lives and sparked the first GAG meeting.

"We have to stop this chain of death," said GAG-DC cofounder Phil Attey. "We want Americans to know that these aren't just random tragedies. They're enabled by the weakest gun laws in the western world and that's just how the gun business, the NRA and their lackeys in Congress want it.

"They turn every one of these massacres into more fear propaganda and more profits for themselves," Attey continued. "They don't even care about the safety of the average small-time gun owner or they wouldn't have blocked safety devices on guns. Their grip on Congress must be broken this November."

Earlier in the day, at 12pm, GAG will be gathering in DC's Folger Park with hundreds of members of the American Federation of Teachers, the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network and dozens of other groups for a march to the nearby NRA lobby headquarters at the 400 block of 1st St. SE.

This unprecedented coalition will protest the gun lobby's grip in Congress that ensures easy availability of lethal weapons. The march and rally will take place on the 53rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

"There must be dramatically fewer guns in dramatically fewer hands if we're going to reverse America's shameful trend of mass shootings," said Mari Gustafson, a straight-ally member of GAG-NY. "And that starts with exposing the fact that the gun indsustry and lobby care more about profits than lives. We'll be bringing that message to the Mall Saturday loud and clear."

Saturday's action is part of an ongoing GAG campaign to expose gun profiteers, from a just-launched campaign to get investor BlackRock to sell its stocks in gunmakers to a silent protest of the NRA booth at the New Jersey State Fair to a demonstration outside an NSSF (gun lobby) conference in D.C. Only two months after its launch, the group has chapters in NYC, D.C., Los Angeles, Massachusetts and New Jersey, with half a dozen chapters forming elsewhere.

Gays Against Guns to Storm Fire Island on Sunday to Set Stage for Fall Campaign

Tim Murphy, my pal and member of the headline-grabbing new activist organization Gays Against Guns, says the group will be out in force on Fire Island to drum up support this Sunday, including a re-creation of its moving white-veiled tribute to Orlando victims on the beaches and boardwalks of the Pines and Cherry Grove:
On Sunday, July 3, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. 100 members of Gays Against Guns, the new direct-action group fighting for an assault-weapons ban and other gun-control laws, will descend on the LGBTQ summer havens of the Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove to build membership and funds for an election-season campaign targeting the National Rifle Association and its bought-and-sold, bad-conscience puppets in Congress.
The group will have tables in the commercial hearts of both the Pines and Cherry Grove all day. In addition, the group will restage its white-veiled tribute to the 49 LGBTQ victims of the Orlando Pulse massacre, which made the front page of the July 27 New York Times.
At 1 p.m., 49 ghostly figures will solemnly walk the length of Pines beach at the height of sunning hours, then, at 6pm, will walk the boardwalk from Cherry Grove to the Pines, to stand silently before throngs of dancing revelers at the Pines' traditional nightly "low tea" bash--a reminder that the Orlando victims were also merely dancing and having fun when they were shot down by a civilian with an assault weapon.
The Fire Island events are meant to extend the energy from last Sunday's March, when up to 750 GAG marchers enjoined tens of thousands of onlookers to join them in the chants, "Hey hey, ho ho, the NRA has got to go!" and, often, the blunter "F*ck the NRA!" Said GAG cofounder Kevin Hertzog, "The reception we got at Pride was so overwhelming, we all canceled our July 4 plans to come out swinging and build our base and our budget while the iron is hot. We're working on a campaign that may begin as soon as this weekend and we want to loop thousands more in before the anger and grief from Orlando wanes and we get complacent before the inevitable next AR-15 massacre."
"We like our acronym because it makes us gag in disgust that the NRA has bought off enough politicians that Congress can't even pass a ban on mass-death weapons like the ban it had until 2004," said cofounder John Grauwiler. "We just read that an Orlando gun shop is going to raffle off an AR-15 to raise money for the Orlando 49's survivors. Does it get any more fucked-up than that?"
The answer, of course, is no.

Also, I'm told they still need people to help out on Sunday and for a separate event on Monday on Long Island. If interested/available, please email gaginducers@gmail.com with either subject line I'M FREE ON FIRE ISLAND SUNDAY or I'M FREE MONDAY. xo
