Dr. 85202? The Times takes an interesting look at "the real face of plastic surgery" -- is it average people or Park Ave. socialites getting all this work done. My mom and I were just discussing this topic the other day, with me telling her how a friend's mom -- nearly 70 and on a fixed income -- had decided to have liposuction (she had to take out a $7,000 loan to pay for it). I said to my mom that this post-"Extreme Makeover"/"The Swan" world we're living in has turned getting plastic surgery into something as routine as getting braces on a kid's teeth, once a status symbol that has become commonplace. My mom agreed but said that it was actually the prevalence of plastic surgery television shows that has stopped her from going under the knife. Seeing the blood and guts and excruciating recoveries so many of these people go through has scared her off for good. (NYT)
