I just realized I had forgotten to post a song of the day, then saw my friend Bruce's post about seeing K.D. Lang live on her "Ingenue Redux" tour and the tune immediately came to me. My brother Bill was a huge fan of the country-tinged crooner and is responsible for introducing me to her. I remember buying "Ingenue" -- and then working backward to the nearly as good "Shadowland" and "Absolute Torch and Twang" (with the Reclines) -- at his insistence, and then playing it on auto-repeat in my bedroom in the little bungalow I shared with "Mike Henson" and his boyfriend, Dennis, on North Croft Avenue in West Hollywood. (I'm sure they were ready to kill me!) There isn't a weak song on the album, but "Season of Hollow Soul" and this one were always my favorites. I'd forgotten about this anniversary tour and wish to god Bill were here so we could go together. (Note my capitalization of her initials. Bill did not believe in acquiescing to cutesy spellings of people, places or things.)
Rosanne Cash tweeted a link to this humdinger of a video from back in 1988, featuring her -- suffering from "horrendous morning sickness" -- and K.D. Lang singing Loretta Lynn's classic "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man." If their tongues were any firmer in their cheeks, they'd have been quarantined for mumps! (Now if only we knew what K.D. had done before the song started to provoke that response from Rose!)
The new Advocate has a great interview with (212) fave K.D. Lang, who is making the rounds to promote her new disc, "Watershed," her first collection of original material since 2000's "Invincible Summer."
In the article ("Where Have You Been, K.D.?") she discusses how her sexuality ended up overshadowing her music for many years (I'm the first to admit I worshiped her first three albums and then lost interest around the time the "Even the Cowgirls Get the Blues" soundtrack came out). But what a collection of music those first three albums is, was and will always be. Check out this homemade tribute set (above) to the classic "Miss Chatelaine," from her 1992 crossover hit, "Ingenue," and you'll see (remember) what I'm talking about. And if that's not enough for you, relive the magic of her duet of "Crying" with Roy Orbison from 1987's Jon Cryer vehicle(!), "Hiding Out."
