Meet GQ's Men of the Year

   Got GQ's Men of the Year 2013 issue over the weekend on my iPad. The Justin Timberlake cover story was particularly revealing. The writer happened to catch the Golden Boy at a moment when his latest movie ("Runner Runner") opened and bombed at the box office, and his "20/20 Experience Part 2" failed to delight critics as its predecessor had, and it sounded like JT was (impossibly) facing criticism for the first time ... at age 32.  I think this is the first Justin Timberlake I've ever deliberately listened to.

Justin's Greatest Love of All: Himself?

 I had to laugh at Gawker's headline about the recent wedding between Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake. Not to rain on the public's fascination with a great "love story," but the self-absorbed details of the former *INSYNC singer's big day quickly reminded me of when I met with a top editor at Us Weekly not too long ago who told me that Justin's image is "more at odds" with his real-life persona (aka the nicest guy on earth) than any other celebrity today -- shaking her head in disgust as she told me it was common knowledge that he was a "complete pig" with "a girlfriend in every city" despite his "storybook romance" with Biel. I don't exactly feel sorry for her, though. Like Katie Holmes before her, you have to believe Biel knew what she signed up for. And as we have seen countless times before, if you can't find super-stardom on your own, the next best thing is to be married to someone who has -- and this often comes at a price.

She's Like a Bird

In this clip, Timbaland and Madonna handle backup duties on Justin Timberlake's new single, "4 Minutes." Whether you like the song or video is a matter of taste, but Madonna's new face is what alarms me most. I just got back from spending my weekend with a college friend I hadn't seen in 20 years. Naturally, the aging process is something that comes to mind. I can completely understand Madonna's desire to remain youthful (trust me!), but at the expense of not looking like yourself -- one of the most recognizable faces in the world? I have friends who have taken the plunge. And it's not out of the question that I could. (Luckily, not being filthy rich saves many of us mere mortals from this temptation!) But I really don't know how "good" I would feel about myself if I looked younger, but lost my quirkiness that made me me. That's a huge price to pay, a price Madonna has apparently decided is well worth to remain "relevant." While you'd be right to argue that everyone in Hollywood does this, I would argue that not doing what everybody else does was once the essence of being Madonna.
