Dueling Homos

With both of us working from home, Damian and has turned the living room into his office while the bedroom is mine. We both do things that require deep concentration, so we essentially work in silence, save for an occasional "how's your day going?" or news alert. Cut to 10 minutes ago.

"Turn your TV on ... RIGHT NOW!!!!!" 

Damian never has the television on during the day -- turns out he'd turned it on because of eye strain so wanted to have something to focus on for a few minutes(!) -- so I knew if he was commenting on what he was seeing it must be something monumental. As you can see, a bearded Eric Swalwell in a tight shirt was the cause for the panic, which happened at the exact same moment I hysterically discovered this photo of Benoit Paire. "Oh, my God! Benoit's in Speedo or pulling up his swimsuit!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm assuming with this hitherto-unheard-of racket the neighbors have already alerted the authorities. 

Eric immediately landed on Room Rater, although strangely they didn't say a word about how that blue shirt makes his eyes pop.

I love my Benoit Paire -- but I must say I was bummed that Felix Auger-Aliassime wasn't able to beat him in the Lyon final Saturday. It was the Frenchman’s second title in recent weeks, while the 18-year-old Canadian is still searching for his first, falling 6-4, 6-3 after sustaining an injury in the second set.

Sadly, Felix had to withdraw from the French Open. He's now the first man to ever be ranked in the Top 25 without ever having won a match in a Grand Slam singles draw. (Yikes.)

Meanwhile, didn't get the result I was hoping for in Geneva, either. Alexander Zverev clinched his first ATP Tour title this season by winning his third consecutive three-setter, saving two match points against Nicolas Jarry to prevail 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(8). Zverev only entered the tournament after a dismal clay-court season, so was clearly lucky to sneak this below-his-level title out. Zverev must be the only man to have ever been ranked in the Top 3 having barely reached one Slam quarterfinal. (And I think he hit No. 3 before that even happened, no?)

And the women annoyed me, too. Ukrainian teenager Dayana Yastremska beat Caroline Garcia 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) to win the Strasbourg crown on Saturday in the longest final of the WTA season. Yastremska wasted two match points in the second set and saved one in the third before closing out the encounter in 2 hours, 58 minutes. It's the third title in eight months for the 19-year-old Yastremska, who also won in Hong Kong and Thailand, and the first of her career on clay.  (Of course I see she already lost in the first round in Paris.)

And finally, top seed Yulia Putintseva rallied from a set down to win her first WTA singles title at the Nürnberger Versicherungscup. The Kazakh defeated unseeded Slovenian Tamara Zidansek, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to hoist her first trophy in her third appearance in a WTA final.

Weekend Tennis Roundup

Two weeks ago, Pablo Andujar defeated Benoit Paire in the final of Marbella Challenger, building the momentum before Marrakech where he was the defending champion after a great run in 2018. 

The Spaniard and the Frenchman advanced into another title match and this time it was the hunky Frenchman who had the upper hand, scoring a 6-2, 6-3 triumph in just 65 minutes for only the second ATP crown after Bastad 2015. 

 Competing in Marrakech and awaiting entry into the Monte Carlo Masters main draw (he wouldn't get it), it was Paire's sixth ATP final and just his second title. 

Christian Garin became the first Chilean to win an ATP Tour title in 10 years when he beat Norway’s Casper Ruud 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3 at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston on Sunday. The victory was Garin’s second over the Norwegian in a month. He also defeat Ruud in the Brasil Open semifinals. The 22-year-old became the first Chilean to win an ATP Tour title since Fernando Gonzalez in Vina del Mar in 2009. (Norway remains title-free.) 

Dennis Novak from Austria claimed his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour, winning the $162,480 Taiwan Santaizi Challenger held on hard courts at the Taipei Tennis Center. The 25-year-old upset No. 3 seed Sergiy Stakhovsky from the Ukraine 6-2, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final.  

Meanwhile, the WTA reports that "American" teenager Amanda Anisimova clinched her first-ever singles title at the Claro Open Colsanitas on Sunday, engineering a comeback from a set and a break down to quell the breakthrough week of Astra Sharma of Australia, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. No.6 seed Anisimova was two games away from defeat at 6-4, 4-4, but the 17-year-old used the steeliness that has been evident all week to claim a third straight three-set win and clinch her maiden trophy in one hour and 43 minutes.

And speaking of 17-year-olds: Polona Hercog beat 17-year-old Iga Swiatek 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a rain-delayed Samsung Open final on Sunday, to capture her first title since 2012. 

In the 18th singles final on the WTA tour this season, Hercog was the 18th different player to lift a trophy. BTW: The men have had 21 different winners in 22 tournaments -- some guy named Roger Federer won twice!
