Aborted Romance

Love birds and Wimbledon singles winners Jimmy Connors and Christine Marie Evert graced the cover of Sports Illustrated 41 years ago today.

Meanwhile, Chrissie turned up this week in The Wall Street Journal's real estate section, although there are no photos of her "12,000-square-foot, five-bedroom, Spanish-style house on 5 acres in a private development" in Boca Raton, Fla. Read HERE.

Maria Sharapova Hires Jimmy Connors as Coach

This scheme didn't work for Andy Roddick, who hired Jimbo at a similar stage in his career, but why not?
"I am happy to announce that Jimmy Connors will be my new coach," Sharapova announced on her website. "I have known Jimmy for many years and we briefly worked together in 2008 just before the Australian Open. I am really excited about our new partnership and looking forward to the upcoming tournaments."

Chris Evert 'Extremely Disappointed' in Jimmy Connors Over Abortion Claim

Well, now we know the answer to this question: Chris Evert did NOT know Jimmy Connors was going to write about the abortion she had while they were a couple, a decision he claims she made without his input. Chrissie had this to say about the reveleation from Jimmy's upcoming memoir, "The Outisider":
“In his book, Jimmy Connors has written about a time in our relationship that was very personal and emotionally painful,” she said in a statement obtained by RadarOnline.com. “I am extremely disappointed that he used the book to misrepresent a private matter that took place 40 years ago and made it public without my knowledge. I hope that everyone can understand that I have no further comment.”
I can't say that I'm surprised. Connors was an ass then, and he's (apparently) still one now.

Book: Chris Evert Aborted Jimmy Connors' Baby

Via The Daily News: In his new memoir, "The Outsider," Jimmy Connors writes about his childhood in hardscrabble East St. Louis, being serenaded by Frank Sinatra and drinking -- at age 16 -- with Dean Martin, plus his struggles with obsessive-compulsive order, dyslexia, infidelity and a gambling addiction. And he covers his complicated relationships and rivalries with Bjorn Borg, Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Vitas Gerulaitis. But it's his romance with one Christine Marie Evert -- whom he strongly suggests had an abortion shortly before they were to marry in 1974 -- that will really get fans' tongues wagging:

He writes:
“An issue had arisen as a result of youthful passion and a decision had to be made as a couple. Connor said he wanted to “let nature take its course” and accept responsibility “for what was to come.”
But the then-19-year-old Evert, who was raised in a devout Roman Catholic home, made a different call. “Chrissie ... made up her mind that the timing was bad and too much was riding on her future,” wrote Connors.
Connors, who had been staying in a Los Angeles apartment with his pal, fellow short-fused legend Ilie Nastase, was perturbed that Evert decided the matter for the both of them. “Well, thanks for letting me know,” Connors claims he told Evert. “Since I don’t have any say in the matter, then I guess I’m just here to help.”
The romance between Connors, the reigning bad boy of tennis, and Evert, who was America’s tennis sweetheart, had played out in public and captured the country’s imagination as both won tournament after tournament. But Connors, who was barely 22 at the time, had been harboring deep misgivings about getting married. And that phone call from Evert shook him badly. Connors said he suggested to Evert they “take a step back and think about giving this a little more time.” Evert was apparently thinking the same thing. “O.K., if that’s what you think,” she replied coldly, Connors recounted. “I’ve got a match tomorrow. Not a problem.” And that, Connors claims, “was it.”
Yeah, Miss Ice Maiden: Thanks for letting him know. Now I wonder if he let her know he was putting this in his book 40-some years later!

Jimmy Connors' Memoir Slated for May Release

Jimmy Connors' memoir, "The Outsider," is finally coming out on May 14. The Associated Press originally reported that it would be published in 2012, to mark the 30th anniversary of his last Wimbledon victory, but the date came and went without a peep. Not sure what the delay is about, but the book promises to cover everything from his 1970s romance with Chris Evert to his intense rivalry with John McEnroe and everything in between, so should be worth the wait! Pre-order HERE.
