Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, is Dead at 76

Woke up to the world mourning the passing of Aretha Franklin. Her seminal album, "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You," came out the same year I did -- "Respect" was No. 1 the week I was born --  and the connection never faded. My Detroit friends were extras in her "Freeway of Love" video and my ex saw her live at Radio City Music Hall -- she performed two songs then bitched out the band for not playing up to her standards and left(!) -- but sadly I never got that close to the legend. But like the rest of the world, she will forever be a part of me, her singular voice, style and attitude -- there will never be another. RIP.

The Birth Day Song

Here's a fun Friday afternoon activity for you via my pal Lois in Cali: this Web site tells you what the No. 1 song in America was on the day you were born. My brother had gotten me a framed copy of the cover of the June 8, 1967, New York Times for Christmas, so I already knew what the top story was (ISRAELIS ROUT THE ARABS -- gee, sound familiar?). And I knew that "In the Heat of the Night" robbed "The Graduate" of the Oscar for Best Picture of '67. But I did not know until now that Aretha Franklin's "Respect," was the No. 1 song the day I was born. I'm happy with my "result" because it's a genuine classic. Imagine if you'd been born June 8, 1992 when "Jump" by Kris Kross ruled the airwaves!
