Black and Blue

The streets of Manhattan were littered with guys returning home from the infamous all-night Black Party at Roseland Ballroom yesterday. Just seeing everybody flooded my mind with memories of my one trip to the Black Party (circa 2002), when I went along with pals Jay, Steve and the late Larry Brickman. Now none of us is exactly "into" the leather scene, but that didn't stop any of us from heading over to the local leather boutique for just the right outfit. I remember how hysterical Larry was watching me try on harnesses and spiked collars. More than anyone I know, Larry loved going to these parties and dancing the night (and morning) away. He'd get so excited that he'd invariably end up being the first one there -- just not able to wait for the fun to begin.

We ran into Larry's boyfriend, Chris, at brunch yesterday. I was happy to hear that he and some friends had attended the event "in honor of Larry." I admit that seeing Chris without Larry made me sad -- just reminding me that Larry should have been there, too -- but I know that Larry was somewhere up there watching his guy have fun, all teeth and in his chainlink harness. We miss ya, kiddo. Life is not the same without you.

The Corrections

When I was an editorial supervisor at PR Newswire, one of my favorite things was reading the corrections that went out over the wire. Truth be told, me and my staff were involved in several doozies, including the infamous Goldman Sachs story about their exec Chester Zara that ended up on the wire -- after some Spellcheck-ing gone awry -- as a story about Goddamn Sacks and its new employee Cheater Sara. Memories ...

So this Times correction made me smile (it happens to the best of 'em). As funny as the correction is, it's far funnier when you read what really appeared in the paper that led to this!

A brief art review in Weekend on March 3 about photographs by Anthony Lepore at the Marvelli Gallery in Chelsea described one work incorrectly. It shows a woman holding a minister's belt, not touching his ''exposed private parts.''

The original:
Though he claims not to be a set-up photographer who stages events for the camera, it's hard to believe that all of Anthony Lepore's shots are spontaneous. Among his pictures here are one of a couple having sex on a sofa, and one of a female parishioner grabbing the exposed private parts of an unruffled prelate who stands before her at a church pew.

Caution

Remember that fake Wikipedia entry about the journalist John Seigenthaler Sr. that claimed, among other things, that he may have had a role in the assassinations of both John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy? The guy who wrote it ended up coming clean after a critic of Wikipedia was able to track down the IP address and trace it to a delivery company where the prankster worked. (He even resigned to spare his employer any problems.) After the incident, Wikipedia's founder, Jimmy Wales, promised that more efforts would to ensure quality control. I wondered what that might entrail and tonight I came across my first Red Flag warning on an entry about noted gays and lesbians.

The Sunday New York Times had a nice article about Martina Hingis' comeback, in which she explains that there was no satisfying outlet for her innate competitiveness. "She could enter horse shows, but the animal at the end of her reins is not always as pliable as the ball at the end of her racket. She could do tennis commentary for European television outlets, but that is a collaborative endeavor, not a competitive one."

"You know," Hingis said recently, "just really nothing satisfied me as much as being back on the court."

Perhaps most amusing is Hingis' reaction to everyone's belief that she has gone diesel. When asked if she has taken on a heavy-duty weight-training regimen and says the beefier upper body -- most notably her arms and shoulders -- is simply the result of growing up.

    "I'm not 17 anymore," Hingis said. "It's not a child's body anymore. It's more of a woman's body, I'd say."

    Sunday Worship: Sean Faris

Sean Faris first caught my eye on MTV's hard-to-comprehend soap opera "Undressed." Everyone hated that show except me. I wonder why ...

    Morning Wood: Derrick Davenport

His ultra sexy HX cover made my blog the other day, but back then I didn't even know his name. Today, we know he's Derrick Davenport, and that he's a fitness model originally from South Carolina. His first break came when he landed on the cover of Playgirl magazine and the rest, as they say, is history.
