Trey Speegle: I Inadvertently Designed Andy Warhol’s Gravestone

Hard to believe that it's been 36 years since Andy Warhol died -- and that I’m now only about two years younger than he was when he bought the farm. I've written about being at Graffiti's nightclub in Old Town Tempe dancing with my friend Chantal when the news broke in 1987.

And now I see artist/writer Trey Speegle -- whose photo “Andy in the Limelight” (1986) is from the exhibit Trey Speegle: 80s Polaroids in Merida, Mexico --  has his own, far more memorable, recollection of the Pop art icon's death:

Andy Warhol died [36] years ago today. I told this story in Catherine Johnson’s book 'Thank You Andy Warhol.' Peter McGough lied in his book and said David [McDermott] had designed the poster, he did not. I did.

When (Andy) died so suddenly it was like a punch in the gut; everybody was shaken up. In ‘86, Peter McGough and David McDermott, great friends of mine [at the time] had just returned from a year’s stay in Italy. They had brought this blank memorial poster back with them. When someone dies in Italy, they make this traditional poster at the printer, and plaster them all over the streets…

I took a blank memorial poster with PAX (peace) and palm fronds and filled it in with his name and the dates of his birth and death. I replaced the illustration of praying hands in an oval with Andy’s high school yearbook picture, and added a quote from the bible. The type 'ANDY WARHOL' was Xeroxed from the headline of the New York Post that read 'ANDY WARHOL DEAD AT 58.'

I printed the poster and we had them plastered it all over downtown, and several were given to the art critic Diego Cortez. He in turn gave one to Andy’s brother.

About a year later, I was at the gallery 56 Bleecker and I saw a grave rubbing of Andy’s headstone by my friend Scott Covert. My jaw dropped.

It turns out Andy’s brother had given the poster to the gravestone maker, who used it as a template for the headstone. It’s black marble, the same size as the poster. The gravestone maker removed Andy’s picture and added back the praying hands.

So, yes, I inadvertently designed Andy Warhol’s gravestone.
🙏🙏🙏

P.S. I finally got around to watching “The Andy Warhol Diaries" on Netflix and loved every minute of it. It made me happy to know there was a real person with feelings behind the fey facade.

Song of the Day: 'Hello Again' by the Cars

Who remembers this should-be classic Cars video? Co-directed by Andy Warhol and Don Munroe and featuring downtown "it" girl Diane Brill, John Sex (with pet boa constrictor), a young Gina Gershon and Warhol assistant Benjamin Liu in drag (as Ming Vauze) -- and Andy himself as the bartender -- "Hello Again" just might be the most quintessentially mid-80s New York City video of all time!

This entry from "The Andy Warhol Diaries" confirms it was as big an ordeal for the Pop artist as you would expect -- and that he likely had nothing to do with the actual directing (natch!):

March 29, 1984
It was raining and snowing out and this was the day we had to film all day doing the Cars video for their song “Hello Again” at the Be-Bop Cafe on 8th Street. Benjamin [Liu] came in drag to pick me up for shooting. He was going to be in it, too.

I had to be a bartender and wear a tux. The crowd of extras looked like the old Factory days -- Benjamin in drag, and a bald-headed mine in a Pierrot outfit, and John Sex with this snake. And then there was Dianne Brill with her big tits and hourglass figure. The Cars were cute.

They finally got to my part at 8:00 and I had to sing a song but I couldn’t remember the words. And I had to mix a drink while I was doing it, and with my contacts on I couldn’t see the Coke button on the soda dispenser.

And that meant being face to face with the Cars for a while, and it was hard to talk to them. I didn’t know what to say. I finished at 9:15. One of the kids gave me a ride home.

If anyone knows who the guy with tits as big as Dianne's is, please let get in touch!

Song of the Day: 'Down to Earth' by Curiosity Killed the Cat

A kind reader reminded me of this gem from 1986. Although Curiosity Killed the Cat was best known in the U.S. for their debut single, "Misfit," the follow-up saw the British boys at their blue-eyed soul best.

P.S. Who remembers when the boys appeared on "Andy Warhol's 15 Minutes" on MTV? The only person more smitten than me was Andy himself!

Wikipedia notes that the “Misfit” music video was directed by Andy Warhol and also features a cameo appearance by him. It was also one of his last assignments before his death the following year. The band met Warhol at an exhibition in Mayfair and he took a shine to bass player Nick Thorp. He then invited the band to a banquet he was having later at the Café Royal and said he was interested in hearing some of their music. After listening to "Misfit,” Warhol said he'd “love to do a video for you boys” after the band’s label had said they weren't going to make a video for it. The video was then shot in New York in a week.

An Afternoon With Andy, From A to B (and Back Again)

Finally went to the Whitney Museum to see the Andy Warhol exhibit and I must say it did not disappoint. Was thoroughly impressed with the scope of the collection on hand -- the Campbell Soup cans, Brillo Pad boxes, Mao, Marilyn, Jackie, Liz plus all of the iconic celebrity portraits and lots of movies, magazines and videos -- all in one building through March 31. I've written about my youthful love of Andy -- I even tried to look like him! -- and how his Factory freaks made me feel a little less isolated as a kid in the Phoenix suburbs. What a thrill to finally stand inches away from so many of these iconic works in the flesh.
