This would have been great fodder for my erstwhile Song of the Day series. (I would add the Go-Go's, who hit No. 2 with "We Got the Beat" as well as four other Top 40 singles.) A corollary would be artists whose No. 1 songs weren't their most-remembered -- let alone their best -- like Duran Duran ("A View to a Kill" and the [gag] "Reflex"), Huey Lewis and the News (what the hell is "Jacob's Ladder"?) and don't get me started about "Maneater" by Hall and Oates! I’d also add Yes (“Owner of a Lonely Heart”), Starship (“Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”), Chicago (“Look Away”), Cheap Trick (“The Flame”) the Beach Boys (“Kokomo”) and Steve Miller's god-awful "Abracadabra."
