Afternoon Headlines

  • No Divine Intervention: Although the clips of John Travolta in "Hairspray" leave me with no desire whatsoever to see the musical remake of my favorite film of '88 (is he supposed to be funny?), I do love what John Waters said about Washington Blade editor Kevin Naff's contention that Divine himself wouldn't be happy with the casting of allegedly "homophobic" former sweat hog: "Believe me. Divine was not political. ... He wouldn't be rolling in his grave except for the fact that he didn't get the part." Divine had much betters wigs, I might add.   • Vicko: When a Bad Newz Kennels dog was wounded in a losing fight, NFL star Michael Vick was consulted before the animal was doused with water and electrocuted. That's just one of the gruesome details that emerged Tuesday when the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and three others were indicted by a federal grand jury. (AP)

  • Westchester Blues: It sounds like Martha Stewart got along better with her fellow inmates than she does with her neighbors in tony Katonah, N.Y. (AP)

  • Hit Man to Pitch Man: I'm intrigued by AMC's new show "Mad Men," about the advertising industry in the late '50s. (NYT)

  • Cover-Up: The New York Post's list of the all-time best cover songs is kinda fun. The inclusion of the Bangles' "Hazy Shade of Winter" is almost enough to let me overlook that they got the entry about Saint Etienne's wonderful version of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" all wrong. Sarah Cracknell wasn't on that song. (NYP)

  • A Mighty Lawsuit: I'm sorry your husband was killed, but this is just ridiculous. Where can I buy a "Tort Reform for Terrorists" T-shirt? (AP)

    If Michael Vick and his cronies really are guilty as charged, I'd be glad to see them locked up for life. But for now I have to be fair and give the presumption of innocence.

    I don't think John Travolta is homophobic, I think he is just closeted.

    On its face, I could agree with you on the Pearl law suit, but it has been used very effectively in the past. When a black teenager was killed in Mobile, AL, some 20 or so years ago, the Southern Poverty Law Center sued the Klan, won a huge judgment and took all of its assets. That shut them down rather effectively in AL for quite a while. In this case, if folks with money are funding the terrorists, then I think we should take their money so they can't fund them any further.
