Big Apple Gays: "New York's highest court is expected to rule today on what one legal scholar called a contest between judicial hearts and minds, a parsing of legal texts and private sympathies." So far Massachusetts is the only state that completely recognizes same-sex marriages as fully equal to male-female unions. Today's ruling could be huge. (NYT)

Miss American Pie: A woman finds her girlhood diaries from the 1970s and turns them into a book: This is the way it was on Aug. 8, 1974. "President Nixon resigned," a diary entry begins. Next sentence: "Made appointment to get my hair cut." Sounds like a riot. (NYT)

Complicated Girl: Kudos to Mary Carillo for finally coming out and saying what tennis fans have been saying for years: Justine Henin-Hardenne is kinda awful. "She's not cognizant of how unattractive her naked ambition and aggression is," Carillo said. The most disturbing scene in Melbourne wasn't Henin-Hardenne's exit, but how insensitive she was to Mauresmo's moment. "Amelie wins her first major under awkward circumstances, but she has to go over there and comfort Justine," Carillo said. "Justine wasn't feeling well, but she should have gone over to Amelie and said, 'I'm sorry I couldn't finish the match.'" Just when I was enjoying Carillo's sizing up of the situation, I came across this: "Justine's mother, sister, nephew, grandfather and great-grandmother lost their lives in exceptionally sad circumstances. Her family almost appeared to be cursed. Yet she chose to treat many surviving relations as though they too had ceased to exist.
