Song of the Day: 'Cynical Girl' by Marshall Crenhaw

I've got a date with Marshall Crenshaw Wednesday at City Winery and couldn't be more excited. I've heard the Detroit native has become bitter in his old age, but if I had written songs as brilliant as this one -- jangle pop meets '50s rocker -- and my career had gone nowhere, I'd probably be pissed too. As they say, all the more for me.

Can't even imagine what it's like to have created something as incredible as Marshall Crenshaw's debut album and have it not changed the world.

Song of the Day: 'Someday, Someway' by Marshall Crenshaw

Despite his remarkable songwriting abilities, Marshall Crenshaw never became a superstar. Still, he was responsible for one of the best singles of the early MTV era. After putting out a lot of music in the '80s and '90s, things slowed down considerably for the Detroit native, who grew up not far from me in Berkley. But the 58-year-old who once played John Lennon in "Beatlemania" will be back soon -- he just got funding for a new project via Kickstarter.
