Song of the Day: 'They Don't Know' by Jennifer Clavin

I've made my love for Bleached known in recent years. But it was only after following the Instagram account of Jennifer Clavin -- whose retro singing and songwriting aligns perfectly with her Old Hollywood beauty -- did I fully understand why I adore her so. Turns out she grew up in the San Fernando Valley listening to 45s by Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry Siouxsie, the Bangles, PrinceJohnny Thunders, Husker Du, the Replacements and the Cure -- played on the Big Bird record player her mother bought her -- is an Obama fan, has a hot daddy and is a cat freak. Need I say more? Here, she covers another of my heroes, the late/great Kirsty MacColl. And I thought they didn't make 'em like this anymore!

Did I mention that she once shared Blondie's "Slow Motion" video?!!!!

Song of the Day: 'Somebody Dial 911' by Bleached

Great interview on Guitar.com, where the sisters break down five songs off their sublime new album, "Don't You Think You've Had Enough?"

Of "Somebody Dial 911," Jessie says:
This song was very much inspired by The Cure! This was a very exciting moment in the recording studio for us that day: We wheeled in a Leslie 122A rotary speaker cabinet and played the dreamy guitar parts. I love old equipment like that. There’s history, good vibes, and it just looks so freakin’ cool when it’s spinning! It was a tight space and not the easiest piece of equipment to move around, but there’s no other sound like it.

Song of the Day: 'Sour Candy' by Bleached

OK. So I discovered these power-pop sisters a few weeks ago with a release from their forthcoming third album. Now I've gone backward into the first two and am even more impressed than I initially thought. I hear influences by a dozen of my favorite artists -- Voice of the Beehive, Joan Jett, Liz Phair, Holly Beth Vincent and the Breeders to name a few -- and find myself getting more hooked with each listen. "Don't You Think You've Had Enough" will be out Friday. Until then, enjoy this instant classic from 2016's "Welcome to the Worms." (Oh, and did I mention I got tickets to see them live in Brooklyn?!!!) Add this to the list of one million things I wish I could share with my brother Bill.

Song of the Day: 'Rebound City' by Bleached

Every time I discover a new band I tell myself, you could have been doing this the past 30 years. (This Bleached song is like the second coming of Holly Beth Vincent, while “Kiss You Goodbye” is the female response to Strange Names.) But the way I see it is this: It's this much more special my way! (Shoutout to Best Coast -- the last "new" band I discovered -- for retweeing this.)
